Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has concluded plans to host a colourful and intellectually engaging celebration of the 2026 World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, as part of efforts to strengthen unity, intercultural understanding and peaceful coexistence within the institution and the larger society.
The event, scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Mini Convocation Arena of the university, is expected to attract students, academic and non-academic staff, cultural enthusiasts and members of the public from different backgrounds across Kwara State and beyond.
According to a statement released by the management of , the celebration is being organised under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, , with the aim of promoting cultural appreciation, social harmony and dialogue among diverse ethnic and cultural groups represented within the university community.
The institution disclosed that the programme would feature a rich blend of traditional and contemporary cultural activities designed to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of various cultures. Activities lined up for the celebration include cultural dance performances, traditional food exhibitions, fashion parade, intercultural dialogue sessions, cultural procession and several indigenous artistic displays.
University authorities explained that the annual global observance provides an avenue for educational institutions and communities to recognise the importance of cultural diversity as a tool for sustainable development, peacebuilding and national integration.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, the management noted that the celebration would not only serve as a platform for entertainment and cultural expression, but also deepen mutual respect and understanding among students and participants from different ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.
“The World Day for Cultural Diversity provides an opportunity for members of the university and the wider community to appreciate and celebrate the uniqueness of different cultures, while promoting unity in diversity,” the statement read.
The university further emphasized that the initiative aligns with the institution’s commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment where diversity is respected and harnessed as a strength for intellectual growth and societal advancement.
Students and staff members have also been encouraged to participate actively by appearing in their various cultural attires, thereby adding colour, identity and authenticity to the celebration.
The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is globally observed to advance conversations around cultural inclusion, mutual respect and sustainable development, while encouraging societies to embrace cultural differences as instruments of peace and collective progress.
Meanwhile, anticipation has continued to build within the Malete community ahead of the celebration, with many describing the event as another opportunity for to reaffirm its reputation as one of Nigeria’s culturally vibrant and socially inclusive higher institutions.
